Pentecost Season
Mark 4:30-34
Jesus said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. Without parables he did not speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.
A Mustard Seed Prayer
by David Morrison
Loving Father, Creator of the seven heavens:
May my prayers, thoughts, and small actions
Be
the raindrop that falls from the sky
Pooling on the dry earth of my soul
Each drop making rings of your mercy
Each ring going out over our world tonight
Son of God, Lord Jesus, Redeemer of humankind:
May my prayers, thoughts, and small actions
Be
the drop of blood that falls from your holy side
Pooling on the dry earth of my soul
Each drop making rings of your mercy
Each ring going out over our world tonight
All-filling Holy Spirit, Indweller of my soul:
May my prayers, thoughts, and small actions
Be
the drop of refreshing that falls from the River of Life
Pooling on the dry earth of my soul
Each drop making rings of your mercy
Each ring going out over our world tonight
Our Holy Three in One: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
May our prayers, thoughts, and small actions
as Community
Be
the mustard seeds that spring from the pools
in the deserts of our world tonight.
May they sprout the shrub of your Kingdom
spreading out like the rings in a pool
from this sacred and present moment
over all time and place forever.
Amen.
